The Riverina Futurist, Prediction #13……Driverless Car in Wagga

Plan ahead for your future, and you’ll be OK…….. because more change is going to occur in the next 20 years than in the previous 200 years. As a Strategic Futurist, I visualise and explore this coming change by following over 1000 global trends.

I then help clients futurise for this change by assessing the impact of those trends, with you, to provide an Opportunity Scan, Risk Assessment, or Strategic Reset for your business, employment path or community today.

I am optimistic about the new opportunities offered by future global change for Wagga and The Riverina.  So, let’s do our weekly time travel….

My Riverina Futurist Prediction #13 is that……. the first locally owned driverless car will be purchased in Wagga in 2019.

This will start to have an significant impact on regional businesses in motor vehicle sales, maintenance and transport. What will be the impact?…….. It will depend on each situation, and the choices made by the people involved.

The Future always offers choices. Do you want to futurise your business for the advent of self-driving vehicles?

The Riverina Futurist : Prediction #12……Robot Barista in Wagga

Plan ahead for your future, and you’ll be OK……..

Riverina entrepreneur Simone Eyles and her partner launched her coffee-ordering app 365cups in Wagga some 5 years ago, to take the queue out of getting a coffee. While the Riverina region has long been known for the export of high quality agricultural products, this was an early example of a range of global trends enabling a business based in Wagga Wagga to sell its services internationally while continuing to enjoy a great regional lifestyle.

My Riverina Futurist Prediction #12 is that……. by 2019, a robot barista will be serving coffee in Wagga using the 365cups app.

The first robot barista began serving coffee at CafeX in San Francisco earlier this year by combining machine learning and robotics, and can serve up to 200 cups per hour. This now offers consistent quality along with no queueing.

So…..human baristas or robots? It will depend on each situation, and the choices made by the people involved.

The Future always offers choices.

As a Strategic Futurist, I study, understand and visualise the future based on over 1000 global trends and changes. I can then apply that knowledge, with you, to your current specific situation to provide a Risk Assessment, an Opportunity Scan, or Strategic Insights and Alternative Futures for you, your organisation, your business, or your community.

I also understand the Future of Work, what jobs will not exist in the future, and what new jobs will arise.

The Riverina Futurist Prediction #11…… Which Career Choice?

Plan ahead for your future, and you’ll be OK……….

Change is now happening at the fastest rate in human history……..and it is overwhelmingly positive change, with advances in medicine one example.

However, artificial intelligence, automation, robots and digitisation will see an enormous disruption in employment in Australia, with the government’s own CEDA report predicting the loss of 5 million jobs in the next 10 years.

My Riverina Futurist Prediction #11 is that……. by 2029, jobs which will likely not exist will include commercial airline pilots, truck drivers, salespeople, journalists, auditors, bookkeeping, some medical specialists, cleaners and artists.

It is no different to when blacksmiths lost their jobs when cars replaced horses, and created many more jobs.

As a Futurist, I study, understand and visualise the future based on over 1000 global trends and changes. I can then apply that knowledge, with you, to your current specific situation to provide a Risk Assessment, an Opportunity Scan, or Strategic Insights into the Future for you, your organisation, your business, or your community. I also understand the Future of Work, and what jobs will not exist in the future, and what new jobs will arise.

I study the Future so I can help others to navigate its challenges with choice.

The Riverina Futurist Prediction #10…… Medical Drones

My Riverina Futurist Prediction #10 is that……. by 2029, Medical Drones will be commonly used in the Riverina to pick up pathology specimens, deliver urgent prescription medicine from pharmacies, and……will automatically avoid other drones being used for crop information, security and other deliveries.

Medical drones are already being used in Rwanda, where Zipline is delivering blood and medical supplies to five hospitals. The drones reduce the delivery time from 4 hours to 15 minutes.

In Australia, drones could be used for emergency aid, such as after a cyclone, or in remote areas.

Drones also offer great potential to transport small items more conveniently than current systems, and can also be used internally in warehouses to locate items or to monitor processes.

The Riverina Futurist Prediction #9… Human Genome Scanning

My Riverina Futurist Prediction #9 is that……. by 2029, Human Genome Scanning will be affordable, widely available in the Riverina, and commonly used to identify hereditary diseases prior to or at birth. At the choice of the parents, gene-linked diseases such as breast cancer, multiple sclerosis and others could then be gene-edited to eliminate that disease in the baby.

Marie Curie said “ Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”

The cost of a full human genome scan in 2005 was about $10 million; that dropped to about $1 million in 2009; and it is now in the order of $2000. Affordability by 2029?….perhaps $50 in the Riverina.

The genome scan itself will be a routine part of pregnancy along with existing tests.

And if a hereditary or rare disease is detected, in Australia it will probably be a choice to be made by the parents as to whether or what treatment occurs.

As a Futurist, I study, understand and visualise the future. I can provide Assessments of Future Risks for your business; provide Strategic Insights into the Future for your organisation, based on over 1000 global trends and changes; or tell you what jobs will not exist in the future, and what new jobs will arise.

The Riverina Futurist #8……SOLAR POWER!

My Riverina Futurist Prediction #8 is that……. by 2029, all power in the Riverina will be generated by solar energy, and 40% of properties will not be on the national power grid, but be using battery storage .

Early Egyptians used energy from the sun to heat their homes during the day, and keep them warmer at night. Some 2000 years later we can now collect energy from the sun using solar panels, and convert it directly to electricity.

Now we are seeing the emergence of new battery technology and solar conversion techniques that will enable an Australian home to have all their energy needs met with solar energy.

When this occurs, we will no longer need to source energy from oil or coal, as by 2029 vehicles will likely be both electric and autonomous, and the entire power industry will be disrupted.

Marie Curie said “ Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”

As a Futurist, I study and understand the future, and can also help you to understand it so that you can prepare for the future in your business, community or individually.

The Riverina Futurist #7……YOU PRINTED A WHAT!

The Riverina Futurist Prediction #7 is that……. by 2029, 3D printing (Additive Manufacturing) will be used widely in the Riverina for articles ranging from running shoes in retail to food in restaurants.

When early humans chipped stones into sharp tools, that was an early example of Subtractive Manufacturing. Over the last century, manufacturing was centralised, and mass production evolved.

Now we are seeing the emergence of Additive Manufacturing, where different materials are added to 3D printers to make customised, one-off products.

3D printing will be used widely to:
• make aircraft wings that are lighter, stronger and cheaper;
• customise running shoes, while you wait in store;
• buy a design, and make toys on demand at home;
• replace teeth in the chair at the dentist;
• make human joints customised to each patient;
• manufacture entire cars by progressively adding new materials; • make the components for entire houses;
• build items on Mars, for colonies being established;
• make individual, customised prosthetics;

Entire industries will be disrupted, including cars, security, health, education and manufacturing.

And by 2029, we may well have 4D Printing, where product designs can change after manufacture, so the product itself can change and adapt to changes in its environment.

If fabricators and manufacturers in the Riverina want to adapt to the increasing global pace of change, including 3D printing, contact me (0409 568 015).

The Riverina Futurist #6……RIVERINA LOCAL LEAVES EARTH!

The Riverina Futurist Prediction #6 is that……. in 2033, Alex, who was educated in the Riverina, will be leaving Earth to spend 6 months aboard the second International Space Station.

Alex will be conducting research experiments into the integration of synthetic biotechnology, bionics, and cryonics so that space travel to other planets in our solar system becomes more feasible.

The second space station, Humanity, will be a collaboration between 11 nations, and will have the capacity to send space missions further out into our solar system.

If you want to be like Alex, dream the future through your education.

#5 Riverina Prediction of the Week……ACCOUNTANCY

As a Strategic Futurist I study and predict the future so I can provide people with maps to the world in 2029; they then choose their destination, and I can help with travel arrangements or guiding so they can prosper in that future, with actions that can be taken today relevant to each specific situation.

Using the strategic foresight paradigm, I apply my knowledge of over 1000 global trends to identify work pathways for individuals, build competitive advantage for businesses, conceptualise strategic innovation for industries, or develop strategic visions for communities.

My #5 Riverina Prediction Of The Week is that……. by 2029, almost 30% of the current work undertaken by Accountants will no longer need to be done by them. This will be due to tax returns being done automatically in the cloud; artificial intelligence; social media; and the formation of global virtual accountancy companies.

Double entry bookkeeping had a major impact on accounting. All of the above global trends will also impact the practice of accounting, and are part of vast global changes which are fast reshaping industries, society, communities and the way business will be done in the future………..and which will cause potential dislocation around retraining needs.

I can help any accounting company, bookkeeping business or individual who wants to prosper in this future, with actions that can be taken today.

To build your competitive advantage for tomorrow, I can provide alternatives, strategies and success factors to prepare for and adapt to this prediction. My futurist knowledge and strategic foresight expertise applied to your specific situation can help you understand the impact of global trends, consider alternative futures, choose a preferred future, and enable planning to ensure that you prosper in this future.

#4 Riverina Prediction of the Week……Manufacturing

As a Strategic Futurist I study, explore and predict the future using strategic foresight.

Global and industry changes are fast reshaping industries, society, communities and the way business will be done in the future. Using strategic foresight with clients, I can apply my knowledge of global trends to identify future paths for individuals, build competitive advantage for your business, generate strategic vision for your industry, or develop a plan for the regeneration of your community.

My #4 Riverina Prediction Of The Week is that …….by 2029, the norm for regional manufacturing and fabrication businesses will be the use of IoT (the Internet of Things) for supply chain connectivity, timely data and improved decisions; AI (artificial Intelligence) for autonomous process machines; augmented reality to enhance training, improve accuracy, and complete tasks faster; and 3D printing (Additive Manufacturing) for one-offs and repairs.

In 1908 Henry Ford revolutionised the car transport industry with the introduction of the Model T Ford, with a global vision and innovation based on the mass production of inexpensive goods coupled with high wages for workers.

All of the new manufacturing technologies above have the capacity to also mass produce cheaply, but with an impact across the entire global economy, and dislocation due to retraining needs impacting millions of people.

For any regional manufacturer who wants to build their competitive advantage for tomorrow, I can provide alternatives, strategies and success factors to prepare for and adapt to this prediction. My futurist knowledge and strategic foresight expertise applied to your specific situation can help you understand the impact of global trends, consider alternative futures, choose a preferred future, and enable planning to ensure your manufacturing future.

#3 Riverina Prediction of the Week……The Future of Retailing

As a Strategic Futurist I study, explore and predict the future using strategic foresight. Global and industry changes are fast reshaping industries, society, communities and the way business will be done in the future. Using strategic foresight with you, I can apply my knowledge of multiple Alternative Futures to identify future paths for individuals, build competitive advantage for your business, generate strategic vision for your industry, or develop a plan for the regeneration of your community.

My #3 Riverina Prediction Of The Week is that……… by 2029, the norm for regional retail businesses will be experiential stores focused on the customer experience (CX), supported by a strong online presence.

This future for retailers is likely due to the IoT, the Millennials demographic, and advances in technology such as augmented reality displays, mobile / self checkout, helpful robots, smart shelves, facial recognition, interactive mirrors, and customer analytics.

In 1878, Frank Woolworth introduced the retail innovations of buying merchandise directly from manufacturers, fixed the selling price on items, and self-service display cases to better service customers. Today’s retailers must also continue to innovate and be customer focused. Amazon’s experimental grocery store in Seattle lets shoppers buy goods without needing to stop at a checkout line, with sensors tracking items as they are put into baskets, and the shopper’s Amazon account being automatically charged.

For any regional retailer who wants to build their competitive advantage for tomorrow, I can provide strategies, alternatives and success factors to prepare for and adapt to this prediction. My futurist knowledge and strategic foresight expertise can help you understand the impact of global trends, consider alternative futures, choose a preferred future, and enable planning to ensure your ongoing participation in the future of retailing.

Riverina Prediction of the Week #2……Future Jobs and Work

Global and industry changes are fast reshaping both society and the way business will be done in the future. As a Consulting Futurist I study and predict the future so I can help people understand and prepare for it today, for their own specific situation.

My Riverina Prediction Of The Week #2 is that……… by 2029, 3 million current jobs in Australia will be displaced, and 4 million new ones requiring different work skills will be created.

The move to the automation of both work and jobs is underpinned by a number of global trends. These include technology advances in the Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence; global demographic and social issues; and economic pressure to reduce labor costs.

The first steam driven weaving machines were destroyed by Luddites living in a horse driven economy. And while most weavers lost their jobs, the steam driven industrial revolution created far more. And the weavers who went to a Consulting Futurist learned new skills so they could do higher paid jobs looking after the machines. Automation has always created more jobs than it destroys, but it requires individuals and businesses to develop strategies and plans to adapt to global and industry trends for their particular situation.

There are both opportunities and risks in the future of work and jobs: “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future” – Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR).

For schools, parents, students or anyone at a career crossroads there are strategies, alternatives and success factors to adapt to this prediction about future work and jobs for each unique personal situation, across a range of interests and capabilities.

My futurist knowledge and expertise can help you understand the impact of future trends, consider alternative futures, choose a preferred future, and enable planning to ensure your participation in future work opportunities.

WW#1 Riverina Prediction of the Week…….. Driverless Cars, Trucks and Harvesters

Global and industry changes are reshaping the business environment and the way business will be done in the future. As a Consulting Futurist I study the future. And as a Consulting Futurist I help businesses predict the future, based on evidence, for their own unique business situation.

My Riverina Prediction Of The Week is that by 2029, 60% of Australians will not have a Drivers Licence because cars will be self-driving, as will trucks, and harvesters; and with this will come new jobs that do not currently exist.

The move to autonomous vehicles is underpinned by a number of global trends. These include technology advances in artificial intelligence and sensors; social pressure to eliminate road deaths, as well as mobility for the disabled; economic pressure to reduce the cost and impact of road trauma in the health system; and environmental benefits.

The first cars were resisted by blacksmiths operating in a horse driven economy. And while most blacksmiths lost their jobs, the car driven economy created far more. But the blacksmiths who went to a Consulting Futurist set up service stations to look after cars instead of horses. Automation has always created more jobs than it destroys, but it requires businesses to develop strategies and plans to adapt to global and industry trends for their specific business situation.

There are both opportunities and risks in the autonomous vehicle future.

I offer 4 tiers of service to help you to navigate your future. Facilitation sessions are participatory, and customised to your needs.
